Some of the controls on the PlayStation 4, for example, make little logistical sense.

It’s important to note that the game is in paid early access mode on PC and PS4, and Epic Games still has a few chinks to iron out, especially when it comes to combining the strategic depth of a MOBA with fast-paced action gameplay. For better or for worse, I actually sometimes forgot about the strategic objectives at hand, as I was simply having too much fun taking out enemies in the heat of combat. For example, whilst Howitzer’s combat style feels akin to that of a third-person shooter, playing as Steel – a tank class with melee-based attacks – is like playing a great brawler game. This gameplay diversity is achieved through Epic Games’ decision to frame the action through tight third-person control mechanics, instead of the tactical birds-eye view gameplay you might expect from a MOBA. With plenty of heroes to choose from already, and Epic Games releasing a new one every three weeks, Paragon delivers on the MOBA staple of providing a diverse hero roster.Įpic Games still has a few chinks to iron out, especially when it comes to combining the strategic depth of a MOBA with fast-paced action gameplay.įortunately, this character variation also extends to the gameplay, with each hero’s play-style feeling satisfyingly unique and enjoyable. I initially played as Howitzer, an anthropomorphic rabbit who takes to the battlefield in his custom built mechanized robot.

Each hero exudes unique personality traits immediately through their cosmetic impressions alone, and, as such, selecting and testing out each one becomes part of the fun itself. The aforementioned character models also enhance the entertainment attained from a feature important to every MOBA – the hero roster. Whilst MOBAs are expected to offer deep strategy and intuitive gameplay above all else, Paragon proves that there’s no reason it can’t look fabulous while doing so. The game boasts detailed character models, lavishly designed settings and fluid animations that wouldn’t look out of place in a triple-A adventure game. To convert someone to the cause of the MOBA phenomenon, first impressions count, so it works in Paragon’s favor that its visuals – powered by Unreal Engine 4, no less – are stunning. Whilst my time with Paragon was far from a perfect experience, most of the game’s problems can understandably be attributed to its early access state Epic Games has mostly succeeded in allowing me to enjoy a genre that I never thought I’d return to.įor all intents and purposes, Paragon doesn’t “look like” what you might expect a MOBA to “look like”. With Paragon, Epic Games has made it clear that they tried to make a MOBA for the disenfranchised to open their eyes to what it is that makes the genre so special. I’m also more of a console player, preferring the accessibility of the PlayStation 4 over the strategic depth of the games in my Steam library. I’ve tried my hand at League of Legends and Heroes of the Storm, but they never engaged me in the same way that other genres do. I consider myself a committed gamer but, despite being well aware of the genre and its ever growing popularity, I never really got the appeal of the MOBA. I’m exactly the sort of person that Paragon is looking to please. This MOBA-action hybrid from the studio behind Gears of War makes a promising first impression.
